  Chris Malcomson: A Profile

Chris comes to the world of miniatures with 12 years experience as a professional marquetry designer. As one of the few makers still working exclusively by hand Chris has the adaptability and skill to draw the most complex of designs in the old fashioned way, with a pencil and paper.

Having worked within the arts throughout his varied career Chris has studied pottery, figurative painting, sculpture and cabinet making, not to mention a 20 year career as a chef where he specialized in food sculpture and banqueting winning a gold medal at Hotelympia in 1988.

He came to marquetry as with miniatures by accident. Having decided to take a sabbatical from catering he was flicking through the yellow pages and came across a marquetry dealer, intrigued he approached the firm and was told their maker had retired, seizing the opportunity he offered to work for nothing such was his confidence. Within a short time he was taken on full time where, over the next year he worked his way through every design with such gusto that he rendered himself unemployed through shear volume of work.

Not to be deterred Chris started his own company supplying a variety of furniture makers with his designs and has made tens of thousands of inlays over the years working with English Heritage among many others.

As a natural miniaturist Chris is ideally suited to his work and sees his past experience as an asset that can be drawn upon.
